The main difference between European and Hollywood films — and this is true of Renoir’s work on both sides of the Atlantic — is that our films are first of all films of personalities, and the American productions are primarily films about specific situations. In France, our instinct is toward verisimilitude and the psychological, while Americans prefer to deal strongly with what happens, with a place and time, and not to stray from the situation.
