There was an extraordinary increase in housing starts after 2002. The US growth rate surged despite the increase in the US trade deficit. The story is that the increase in the cross-border investment inflows led to a boom in US housing and an increase in the US trade deficit; the increase in employment in construction more or less offset the decline in employment in the production of exports and import competing goods.
