Among the concerns running through (Jules Verne’s) work were the exhaustion of natural resources, the polluting effects of factories, the inhumanity of capitalist industrial organization, the devastating consequences of catastrophes (both natural and man-made) and the dictatorship of experts. Many of his most vivid scientific characters are misanthropes, such as Captain Nemo, or deranged megalomaniacs, like Dr. Ox (or both, as with Robur the Conqueror); although presented in a favorable light, there was a chilling quality even to his hygienist utopia of Franceville.
